Royal Courts of Justice (The) – London WC2A
The imposing Victorian Gothic building, designed by G E Street, was opened by Queen Victoria in 1882, the architect's finest achievement, and the last major Gothic revival building in London. Made from 35 million bricks faced with Portland stone, the Royal Courts of Justice are said to contain 1,000 rooms and 3.5 miles of corridors. The stress of building was so great that it caused Street's early death. As well as marveling at the features and scale of the building, visitors are invited to view an exhibition on the traditional court attire. The ornate Central Hall informs visitors of the cases currently being heard and their progress. Pre dinner drinks are best taken in the Costume Display Gallery and the Crypt areas adjoining the Great Hall. There is also a large outdoor area known as the Quadrangle. This area is suitable for a marquee or just to have a summer reception.
